Where: Sacramento Fine Arts Center - 5330 Gibbons Dr B, Carmichael, CA 95608
When: June 26, 2027 | 9am -12pm
What makes a sunlit landscape feel truly warm and alive isn't actually the yellow paint in the highlights. It's the rich, cool colors hiding inside the shadows. In this workshop, you will learn the secret to capturing glowing "dappled" sunlight filtering through trees without your greens and shadows turning muddy.
What We Will Do:
- Part 1 – The Warm-Up Activity (Complementary Shadow Mixing): A guided color-mixing exercise showing how to pair warm, sunlit yellow-greens and peach highlights directly against cool violet-blue and earth-toned shadows so the sunlight visually vibrates off the canvas.
-
Part 2 – The 8'x10" Mini-Painting: Complete a sun-drenched forest pathway study. We will block in the big shadow masses first and finish by "carving in" pools of warm, dancing sunlight across the path, grass, and tree trunks using confident, decisive brushwork.
Materials:
I ask students to bring their own supplies so that when the workshop ends, you have a familiar, working kit ready to go for practicing at home.
- Testing the waters? - If you're brand new to painting or want to try oil painting before investing in your own materials, I have studio supplies you can borrow for the session. (Please send me a quick note after registering so I can set aside supplies for you).
- Need help purchasing supplies? - Art stores can be overwhelming, so I've curated my recommended materials list to provide everything you need to get started without buying unnecessary supplies.
