Where: Sacramento Fine Arts Center - 5330 Gibbons Dr B, Carmichael, CA 95608

When:  May 22, 2027 | 9am -12pm

Whether you are painting a quiet lake, a marina, or a sunlit stream, convincing water comes down to understanding value relationships and directional brushwork. Learn how to make water lie flat in perspective and shimmer with light.

What We Will Do:

  • Part 1 – The Warm-Up Activity:  Practice the core rules of reflection values (how darks get lighter and lights get darker in water) and horizontal ripple brushwork.
  •  Part 2 – The 8'x10" Mini-Painting: Paint a golden-hour water reflection study, capturing broken color, sunlit ripples, and glassy darks.

Materials:

I ask students to bring their own supplies so that when the workshop ends, you have a familiar, working kit ready to go for practicing at home.

  • Testing the waters? - If you're brand new to painting or want to try oil painting before investing in your own materials, I have studio supplies you can borrow for the session. (Please send me a quick note after registering so I can set aside supplies for you).
  • Need help purchasing supplies? - Art stores can be overwhelming, so I've curated my recommended materials list to provide everything you need to get started without buying unnecessary supplies.
