Where: Sacramento Fine Arts Center - 5330 Gibbons Dr B, Carmichael, CA 95608
When: Jan 23, 2027 | 9am -12pm
Discover the secret behind glowing, realistic oil paintings: a strong value underpainting. Before ever worrying about complex color mixing, a monochromatic underpainting study allows you to establish dramatic light, accurate proportions, and three-dimensional depth in a single sitting.
What We Will Do:
- Part 1 – The Warm-Up Activity: Learn how to squint, simplify complex scenes into 3-4 core values, and paint a quick 7-step value scale to train your eye.
- Part 2 – The 8'x10" Mini-Painting: Starting with a rich, toned ground, we will block in dark shadows with a brush and "carve out" glowing highlights using rags, Q-tips, and solvent to complete a finished, atmospheric monochromatic boat and water study.
Materials:
I ask students to bring their own supplies so that when the workshop ends, you have a familiar, working kit ready to go for practicing at home.
- Testing the waters? - If you're brand new to painting or want to try oil painting before investing in your own materials, I have studio supplies you can borrow for the session. (Please send me a quick note after registering so I can set aside supplies for you).
- Need help purchasing supplies? - Art stores can be overwhelming, so I've curated my recommended materials list to provide everything you need to get started without buying unnecessary supplies.
