Where: Sacramento Fine Arts Center - 5330 Gibbons Dr B, Carmichael, CA 95608
When: Dec 5, 2026 | 9am -12pm
Capture the quiet, atmospheric beauty of a winter sunset on canvas. Painting a snowy twilight is all about mastering temperature contrasts. Learn how to mix luminous, warm skies filled with oranges and soft pinks, and contrasting them against the cool, subtle shadows of a snow-covered landscape..
What We Will Do:
- Part 1 – The Warm-Up Activity (Sunset Gradients & Snow Shadows): Practice blending a smooth gradient of warm sky colors using a split-primary palette to keep your oranges and pinks vibrant without creating gray mud. We will also practice mixing cool, convincing shadow tones for the snow.
- Part 2 – The 8'x10" Mini-Painting: Paint a serene winter sunset study. Painting warm, glowing light across the sky, the subtle temperature shifts in the snow-covered field, and anchoring the composition with dark, contrasting tree silhouettes and a rustic fence.
Materials:
I ask students to bring their own supplies so that when the workshop ends, you have a familiar, working kit ready to go for practicing at home.
- Testing the waters? - If you're brand new to painting or want to try oil painting before investing in your own materials, I have studio supplies you can borrow for the session. (Please send me a quick note after registering so I can set aside supplies for you).
- Need help purchasing supplies? - Art stores can be overwhelming, so I've curated my recommended materials list to provide everything you need to get started without buying unnecessary supplies.
