Where: Sacramento Fine Arts Center - 5330 Gibbons Dr B, Carmichael, CA 95608
When: February 27, 2027 | 9am -12pm
In any animal portrait, the eyes hold the soul of the painting, and the surrounding fur brings it to life. By zooming in tightly on a single expressive eye, we skip hours of full-body proportion drawing and spend our studio time mastering lifelike textures and wet, glowing eyes.
What We Will Do:
- Part 1 – The Warm-Up Activity: Practice three essential brush techniques for creating believable short and long fur without painstakingly painting every individual hair.
- Part 2 – The 8'x10" Mini-Painting: Complete a close-up wildlife or pet eye study. Learn how to layer the iris like a glass marble, place the catchlight, and overlap fur edges naturally into the background.
Materials:
I ask students to bring their own supplies so that when the workshop ends, you have a familiar, working kit ready to go for practicing at home.
- Testing the waters? - If you're brand new to painting or want to try oil painting before investing in your own materials, I have studio supplies you can borrow for the session. (Please send me a quick note after registering so I can set aside supplies for you).
- Need help purchasing supplies? - Art stores can be overwhelming, so I've curated my recommended materials list to provide everything you need to get started without buying unnecessary supplies.
